How our library is organized

The Lahaina Intermediate School Library boasts a collection of over 11,000 printed resources for students and staff to explore!

Our fiction section is thoughtfully organized by genre, making it easy to find your next favorite read. Dive into Humor, Adventure, Horror & Suspense, Sci-Fi, Dystopian, Mystery, Fantasy, Sports, Historical Fiction, Realistic Fiction and Young Adult.  We also have a wealth of graphic novels, manga, and quick reads to satisfy every reading style.

For those seeking factual information, our nonfiction collection includes a diverse range of subjects, with a special focus on Hawaiian literature and culture.

Shelf Organization

Each book in our library has a call number on the spine which indicates the section it belongs to in the library and its shelf location.  Most call numbers will have 2 or 3 lines.

Fiction

Section

Our fiction section is organized according to genre.  Within each section, it is organized alphabetically according to author’s last name.  Shelf order: Author’s Last name > First Name > Book Title.  If the book is part of a series, the books are in series number order.

Call number:

1st  line: FIC

2nd line: First 3 letters of the author’s last name

Quick

Reads

Books in this section are chapter books that range between 50 to around 150 pages. 

Call numbers will all start with QUICK FIC on the first line then the first 3 letters of the author’s last name on the secondl ine.

Manga/

Graphic

Novels

Labels will be yellow and will read MANGA or GRAPHIC. 

The first three letters of the author’s last name will follow.  These books are organized alphabetically.

Nonfiction

Section

Nonfiction books are organized according to the Dewey Decimal System so will have a number on the first line of the call number.  The second line will be the first three letters of the author’s last name.  Non fiction books should be put into numerical order.  Shelf order: Dewey Decimal Number > Last Name > Book Title

Call numbers:

1st line: Dewey Decimal Number

2nd line: First 3 letters of the author’s last name

 

Biography and Autobiography Call Numbers:

1st line: 920 for autobiographies, 921 for biographies

2nd line: First 3 letters of who the book is about

Hawaiian

Our Hawaiian section includes biographies, fiction and non-fiction books.  The call number for all books in the Hawaiian section will start with H for Hawaiian.

Hawaiian Biography call numbers:
1st line: HB

2nd line: First three letters of who the book is about

Hawaiian Fiction call numbers:

1st line: H FIC

2nd line: First three letters of the author’s last name

Hawaiian Non-Fiction call numbers:
1st line: H followed by the Dewey Decimal number

2nd line: First three letters of the author’s last name
